The Power of Constraints. - Brief presentation

Applying constraints are an opportunity to force creativity in your photography. Limiting yourself to less gear, a strict theme, a tiny location, only multiple exposure fosters more creativity than complete freedom. Famous photographers have worked under such constraints, inclulding Joseph Koudelka, who moved from a 25mm lens to 35mm and 50mm lenses to see the world differently and improve his craft, or Robert Capa with his endless desire to be close to the (war) action..

Here are two powerful TED talks about the power of constraints:

Here is an article from fstoppers about the power of constraints:

We will have an opportunity to share our creative journey in August. Here's the challenge:
You will be able to choose your own constraints—or select a random pair from out of a hat e.g.

  • Wide open aperture + shoot from ground level
  • Only shadows + square format
  • Single object + backlight only
  • Three colours max + long exposure
  • No people + leading lines must be featured
  • One hour + handheld only (no tripod)

.Create up to three images that demonstrate how a creative constraint improves your final photograph. Consider how effectively the constraint sparked your creativity, not technical perfection alone. Be ready to share your insights if you're willing. If you create a body of work (in addition to three images), lets showcase it!
