Placing a watermark on images that are posted on the Web will identify them as your own work and discourage people from copying them or claiming them as their own. This method will add a watermark in Photoshop.

1. Open an image.
2. Set the foreground colour to 50% gray. (Use HSB values 0-0-50 or RGB values 128-128-128). To make the watermark more visible increase to 60% gray.
3. Select the Horizontal Type Tool and type in your name.
4. Select the Custom Shape Tool and then select the Copyright Symbol. While holding down the shift key drag the Copyright symbol in front of your name.
5. Select both the text and Copyright symbol layers
   (select one layer and then hold down the shift key while selecting the second layer).
6. Align the vertical centres
   (Layer >> Align >> Vertical Centers).
7. With the two layers still selected merge the layers
   (Layer >> Merge Layer)
8. Rename the merged layer ‘Copyright.’
   (Layer >> Layer Properties >> Name: ‘Copyright).
9. On the Copyright layer select ‘Group into New Smart Object
   (Layer >> Smart Objects >> Group into New Smart Object).
10. Open the Copyright layer blending options and set to a Blend Mode of ‘Hard Light’ and turn on ‘Bevel and Emboss.’
    (Layer >> Layer Style >> Blending Options)
11. Continue with the next step to save the Copyright Layer for use on other images.
12. Select Layer >> Smart Objects >> Export Contents and save as Copyright.psb

To add the saved watermark to an image.

13. Open Copyright.psb
14. Select >> All
15. Edit >> Copy
16. Open your image
17. Edit >> Paste
18. Resize and re-position the watermark logo to suit the image
    (Edit >> Free Transform)
19. Set to a Blend Mode of ‘Hard Light’ and turn on ‘Bevel and Emboss’ as per 10. above.
