MAYFIELD GARDEN, OBERON
Mayfield Garden is the main feature of this weekend however there is much more to see in the area. Mayfield Garden is 13 kms north west of Oberon on Mayfield Road. It is a 65 hectare private garden which is considered to be one of the most spectacular cool climate gardens in the Southern Hemisphere. Attractions within the garden include a maze, chapel, stumpery, aviary, Chinese pagoda, Mayfield Lake and garden rooms. Open 7 days a week from 9 am with last entry at 3 pm before closure at 4.30 pm. Entry costs $38 per adult with no concession for Seniors. https://mayfieldgarden.com.au/ Some options for how to spend the second day in the area are - Hill End via O'Connell, Bathurst, Peel, Wattle Flat and Sofala is 123 kms north of Oberon. - Bathurst is rich with history and gold rush heritage. Sights include Abercrombie House, the Courthouse, National Motor Racing Museum, Mt Panorama Racetrack. - Sofala is considered to be Australia's oldest surviving goldrush town after gold was discovered here in 1851. Sights include old buildings from goldrush days, Chinese miner settlement and Buurree Walking Trail which is great for birdwatching. - Hill End is now a Heritage listed historic site. Sights include Craigmoor House and Bald Hill Tourist Mine. - O'Connell, Peel and Wattle Flat are small villages which are home to some historic buildings. Kanangra-Boyd National Park is 24 kms south east of Oberon. This lookout offers views across the Greater Blue Mountains Area and opportunities for walking. You'll see wildflowers and might see wedge-tail eagles. The nearby Kanangara Waterfall Walk is 1.6 kms one way (medium grade) to the waterfall. Sunrise photoshoots will be arranged the night before between those interested in attending. Friday night's dinner will be a BBQ at Jenolan Holiday Park, 7 Cunynghame Street, Oberon. Arrangements are that you bring your own drinks and meat. Closer to the time we will organise for people to contribute food to share such as pre dinner nibbles, salads, dessert and after dinner nibbles. Bookings will be made at either pubs and/or clubs for dinner on Saturday and Sunday nights. Closer to the time we will check numbers of attendees for these dinners. A few suggestions for places people may want to visit on the way to or from Oberon are - If travelling via Blackheath Campbell Rhododendron Gardens, 1 Bacchante St, Blackheath. Rhododendron blooms are at their best between late September and mid November. The entrance gates to the car park are opened at 9am and closed at 6pm. Entry is by donation of $5. Gory'u Japanese Gardens, 85 Baaners Lane, Little Hartley. The garden offers Japanese maples, flowering cherries, structured black pines & dwarf spruce. Open 9 to 5 every day. Entry $20, $16 for seniors. There is a lot of roadwork near the entry so look carefully for the signs. Coming from Sydney it is the 2nd left road after the Pass. There is a Vet on the corner. If travelling via Bilpin Wildwood Garden, 29 Powells Road, Bilpin. The garden features a cherry walk in peak flower in mid September. In October see a collection of cool climate plants in a natural woodland setting. Open Friday to Monday 10am to 4pm. Adults $12.50, Concession $10. |
