    Description: Newcastle via the Coast
First weekend trip of the year – Newcastle via the coast, 27 and 28 March

Update 25 March - suggestions from Jan re other places to visit:

The jetty at Catherine Hill Bay is worth photographing - its more than just a jetty - it was a large coal loading wharf.

Another place to visit is the Hunter Wetlands at Shortland (20 min drive from central Newcastle) - lots of photography opportunities with birds, etc and a nice cafe overlooking the lake. I checked the website - it appears to be open.

This two- to three-day trip takes us to Newcastle, via the pristine coastal beaches and headlands of Norah Head and Lake Munmorah. We will have a group dinner in Newcastle on the Saturday night at Customs House Hotel.

    Hotel bookings are self organised.

The self managed itinerary might include a first stop at Norah Head, with its lighthouse, swimming baths, and the expansive Soldiers Beach and rock platforms. To get to Norah Head, we head up the M1 to the Toukley exit and then travel onto Norah Head – about 1.5 hours from the North Shore. Further up the coast road (20 mins), Munmorah State Conservation area has stunning bush, sea scapes and rock cliffs. Caves Beach is also worth a visit.

Basing ourselves in Newcastle, there are many options for the rest of the day and Sunday if you elect to stay – further north to Morna Point Track, with extensive coastal bushland, seascapes and rock cliffs; west into Kurri Kurri or Morpeth, both historic towns with some beautiful 19th century architecture, or just exploring the sights of Newcastle – Fort Scratchley, the Ocean Baths, Newcastle Beach itself, Blackbutt Nature Reserve and historic buildings within Newcastle.

Please ensure to reserve your place particularly due to dinner reservations.

PS Judith tells us that the best images from the 2020 Maitland International Salon of Photography will be exhibited at the Maitland Regional Art Gallery from 27/2 to 30/5. It may be worth considering as an extra detour on the way there or back.
