Description: Outing: Monday 25th February 2019.
David Goldblatt Exhibition at the MCA in the The Rocks.

    David Goldblatt: Photographs 1948–2018
“Considered one of the greatest photographers of our time, David Goldblatt is highly regarded for his compelling observations of South Africa during the rise and dismantling of apartheid. By turning his focus on the nation’s people, his images offer powerful reflection and insight into the country’s turbulent history.

A landmark exhibition for the MCA, this is the first major retrospective of David Goldblatt's work in the southern hemisphere and encompasses the breadth and scope of his career. The exhibition will feature key black-and-white and colour photographic series, as well as early vintage prints and never-before-seen material from his personal archive.”

NCP will be having a group outing to the MCA for this exhibition on Monday 25th February. There are some 300 photographs to see so we expect to spend about 1.5 to 2 hours for the tour.  It will be a self-guided tour followed by some photography around the Rocks area, dinner, and then maybe catch the sunset before heading home.

Note: There is an 80 minute Documentary film about David Goldblatt that is part of the exhibition.  It is shown daily at 10.30am, 12pm, 1.30pm, and 3pm.  Should you wish to watch the film, we suggest you do not meet in the cafĂ©, but make your own way to the exhibition to give time to see the film and the photographs.

Getting there: Meet in second last carriage of train departing Hornsby 1.40, Gordon 1.54, Chatswood 2.04. Change at Wynyard. Arrive At Circular Quay 2.30pm

Meet: For coffee at MCA Cafe at around 2.30pm or soon after.  We will aim to enter the exhibition at 3pm.

Price:  A group booking is priced at $22 (versus $24 adult price), however for anyone with a concession card (including a Senior’s card) the price is $19.  Please purchase tickets online before the event if you can.  Please advise on the sign-on sheet if you do not have a concession card and we will endeavour to get a group rate, but we need a minimum of 5 people on that rate.

Photography challenge, one hour one focal length - There are plenty of photographic opportunities around the MCA, Circular Quay, Dawes Point & The Rocks lanes, but I’m sure we will have done this before, so the challenge is to bring one prime lens – or use a zoom, but set it to a single focal length.  You have one hour.

Dinner: Ribs & Burgers at The Rocks 6.00-7.00pm. Menu: http://ribsandburgers.com/au/the-menu/food/

After dinner photography: Sunset will be at 7.37pm, so, weather permitting, we will aim to find a good place to capture the sunset, before making our way home – unless anyone wants to turn it into a night session!

A few tips for the outing
    * We’ll be walking or on our feet for several hours so wear comfortable shoes.
    * Dress accordingly; it may be cool in the evening.
    * We’ll be shooting in daylight and around sunset, so you may want to bring a tripod if you want to use slow shutter speeds.
    * Bring water and snacks to keep up your energy while you walk around.
    * Do some research for shot ideas. Even if you think you know these areas well, you’ll be surprised at the range of possibilities. You can be guaranteed of coming across things you either didn’t know about or had forgotten.

If you wish to join this outing please add your name to the sheet at the entrance desk at the next meeting or email Nigel Streatfield on outings@ncp.org.au. We need to know numbers for finalising the MCA booking.
