National Creative Photography Competition 2008

Jessica Drake

2007 Winner - Untitled by Jessica Drake

Northside Creative Photography Inc is pleased to announce the National Creative Photography Competition will again be conducted in November this year.

Each year the competition reveals a host of new ideas and techniques that demonstrate the power of digital in the hands of creative photographers. At the same time however beautiful work using classic darkroom techniques such as lith printing and cyanotype is also entered.

The competition is not restricted to two dimensional work and creative three dimensional pieces and works in mixed media are also encouraged.

The judge this year is Des Crawley. Des has, in theory at least, retired from academia but continues to dazzle the world around him with his creativity. His list of credentials within the arts includes Emeritus Professor of the University of Western Sydney, Adjunct Professor of RMIT University and Honorary Fellow of the Australian Institute of Professional Photographers. His work has been exhibited across Australia and overseas in UK, New York and the Peoples' Republic.

The only rule of the National Creative Competition is that the image or images employed must be created by the entrant, that is, no manipulation of stock images or images from the web.

A first prize of $300 and supplementary prizes and commendations will be awarded

The entry form may be downloaded here. Entries close Friday 14 November 2008.

Entries will be exhibited at St David’s Uniting Church Hall, Pacific Highway, (cnr Provincial Rd), Lindfield from 7.30pm on 19 November.

Sydney Opera House photography competition - closes 30 July 2008

Aspiring photographers are invited to submit their most creative image of Sydney Opera House as part of a new photography competition announced today by Sydney Opera House and Hewlett-Packard (HP).

House in Focus offers one talented photographer the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to have their photo of the World Heritage Listed masterpiece displayed at the House throughout September.

As well as having their photo viewed by thousands of visitors, the winner will also receive a HP Touchsmart desktop computer (www.hp.com.au/touchsmart).

Members of the public will vote for their favourite images, with the top ten presented to the judging panel of architect Jan Utzon (son of Sydney Opera House architect Jørn), leading photographer Eric Sierens, director of Max Dupain and Associates and Michael Mendenhall, Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer, Hewlett-Packard.

Creativity, originality and a fresh way of looking at one of the world’s most photographed buildings are what the judges will be looking for. What they don’t want is another shot of Sydney Opera House with the Harbour Bridge in the background.

The only requirement is that photos must be of the exterior of the building. Digital manipulation of the images is permitted and all entrants are encouraged to let their imagination run wild.

“Innovative ideas and creativity are the lifeblood of Sydney Opera House and we want photographers to surprise and amaze the judges with their interpretations of this amazing building”, said Sydney Opera House Chief Executive, Richard Evans.

Corporate Marketing Director for HP South Pacific, Richard Sumich added, “Sydney Opera House and HP are excited to help people connect with the House. I think we are going to see some really interesting and new perspectives of this great icon…I can’t wait to see them."

Photographers of second and third placed entries will receive a large scale canvas of their work, a roof tile from Sydney Opera House collected during the construction of the building and a copy of the book Building a Masterpiece: the Sydney Opera House.

Up to 5 entries per person can be submitted. Entries can only be submitted electronically. Full details of how to enter the competition can be found at www.sydneyoperahouse.com.

Closing date for all entries is midnight (AEST) 30 July 2008.

Outings

July Outing – Sunday 20th July
Harold Reid Foreshore Track, Middle Cove

Please note: We will now meet in North Arm Rd instead of Sugarloaf Cres as previously advertised.
This leisurely walk will take us along the foreshore of Sugarloaf Bay.

Meet at 9.30am in the car park on the western side of Gordon Station to car pool to Middle Cove. For members who wish to go independently, we will meet around 10am near the end of North Arm Road (from Eastern Valley Way turn into Greenfield Ave then left into North Arm Rd). Just past The Quarterdeck there is a large rock on the left hand side of the road, where there is plenty of parking.

There will be an opportunity to photograph the mangroves at water level, but the track can be muddy, so please wear appropriate footwear. A tripod may come in handy.

Jan Glover will be co-ordinating the outing – her contact number is 041 925 6038.
For more information on the walking track go to Tracks.

Images Missing?

There have been a small number of reports of users not being able to see the images on this site while they have been able to see images on other sites. The reason for this is that 'Hotlink Protection' is enabled on this site. This prevents other sites from directly linking to images on our site; a technique which is known as 'bandwidth stealing.'

The fault arises because of a mis-configuration in the user's firewall. This could be the firewall on the user's own computer, or in the case of a work computer it could be the company firewall.

The technical explanation is that when our server receives a request for an image, it looks for the http referrer information. If this is one of the allowable referrers such as http://www.ncp.org.au then the image will be sent. If the referrer is blank or not in the list of allowable referrers then the image is denied.

The solution therefore is to configure the firewall so that the referrer information is not blocked for http://www.ncp.org.au.

Windows Firewall

There have been no reports of the Windows Firewall blocking referrer information. To find out if you are using the Windows firewall:

  1. Under Start Double-click Control Panel
  2. Double-click Windows Firewall and look under the General tab
  3. If On (recommended) is highlighted then Windows Firewall is activated
  4. If Off (not recommended) is highlighted then another firewall is in use

Norton Firewall

  1. Go to Norton Firewall Config main screen
  2. Double-click 'Privacy Control', you'll get the 'Norton Firewall Privacy Control Screen'.
  3. On that screen, click 'Advanced'
  4. On the 'Advanced' screen, scroll down under web contents options until you get to the domain/site (i.e. http://www.ncp.org.au) and click it once to select.
  5. Under 'Information About Visited Sites' uncheck default, and set it to 'Permit'.
  6. Click OK on both that screen and the 'Advanced' screen.

OR:

  1. Go to Norton Firewall Config main screen.
  2. Click on the 'Options' menu at the top of the screen and choose 'Internet Security.'
  3. Click on the 'Web Content Tab.'
  4. Under 'Global Settings,' find the box labeled 'Information about visited sites.' Click the 'Permit' radio button in this section.
  5. Click the 'OK' button to save your changes.

ZoneAlarm

  1. Open ZoneAlarm by right clicking on the icon in the task tray.
  2. Click Privacy on the left side.
  3. Under Cookie control, select Custom.
  4. In the Custom Privacy Options window, choose the Cookies tab.
  5. Unclick Remove Private Header Information.

ZoneAlarm also blocks images if you have settings on 'High'. A 'quick fix' for this is to change back to Default settings for ZoneAlarm, which is 'Medium'.

Other Firewalls

If the fault is observed on other firewalls please advise the Webmaster.
